Ever since I started Filipinas In Showbiz back in 2009, I have had numerous inquiries why I chose that name instead of just using Marian Rivera, or combining the 3 headliners: Marian-Claudine-KC. I’ve always told them that there is a bigger purpose why I chose the Filipinas In Showbiz domain name and I will write about it when the time comes. Today is the day.
But first, let me give you a little bit of history…..
As I’ve explained in the About page, this showbiz blog was conceptualized as an outlet to support and defend Marian Rivera first and foremost. Claudine Barretto and KC Concepcion are part of it because before I knew who Marian was I was already enamored by Claudine and KC in the ABS-CBN network. Before Marian Rivera, I was a YouTube stalker of Kapamilya shows which mostly involve Claudine and KC, with the occasional dosage of Maja Salvador dance videos. I was satisfied being a mere YouTube watcher and Pep.ph reader of these Filipina celebrities.
I became familiar of the Marian Rivera name through various articles on Pep.ph but I really didn’t pay much attention to it. I live in the US, I didn’t know what else is going on in the Entertainment industry except for the KC, Claudine, and Maja searches on YouTube. I would read about other celebrities too of course and I’m familiar with the veterans whom I “knew” from childhood.
Until one day, sometime in 2008, I came upon a video on YouTube comparing the dancing skills of Marian Rivera and Angel Locsin. I was familiar of the latter but it was through that video that I’ve found out she moved to ABS-CBN. Being a passionate dancer myself I studied that dance mashup video to decipher who’s the best dancer of the 2. Hands down, it’s Marian Rivera. What followed after that video were hours, days, and nights researching everything about Marian. And I mean all the nitty gritty news that has been written and video taped about her and with her in it. Including all the accusations and negative comments. Believe it or not that’s how I fell completely in love with Marian. I was amazed at how raw and honest she is. She is different. She speaks with confidence and no inhibitions. She’ll say what she wants to say and will do what she believes is right even if it means breaking the Pinoy showbiz “protocol” which mostly involves pa-gimik. Marian is REAL!
After years of being a Pinoy showbiz enthusiast on the sidelines I’ve decided I had to do something. Albeit not knowing of my existence, I wanted to give Marian Rivera a medium to be defended, to be celebrated for being the authentic person that she is. I knew I could utilize what I have been doing online since the 90′s.
I have been a blogger before “blog” became a household name. While I may not be famous in the blogging community I have been part of it since the ’90s. I’ve worked as a Problogger in various companies blogging about Pop Culture(Hollywood celebs), Music, Lifestyle(motherhood, parenthood, womanhood…), US Daytime Soap Operas, Foodblogging, and Fashion. Blogging is my milieu.
In 2007, 2 blogger friends of mine, Noemi Lardizabal-Dado and Dine Racoma started the campaign FilipinaImages.com in accordance with Yan Ang Pinay campaign to disseminate the sad truth which is when you type the word “filipina” on search engines, numerous mail-order bride websites will pop up. I am a strong proponent of enlightening people all over the world that Pinays are not mail-order brides. While this industry unfortunately exists, my friends and I want to enhance the Filipina image, one search term at a time.
What do we mean by “balance?”
The word “Filipina” on the internet showcases websites that are top-heavy on her physical attributes, dating availability, or marriage suitability. What’s wrong with this picture? Nothing and everything.
If you google or yahoo search the word, “Indian,” there is no reference to an Indian woman in the first 10 results. Likewise with the word, “American” or “Russian.” No woman-related entry either. Type “Filipino.” Chances are that the prominent entry you will find on the first page showcases the keywords, “Filipino girls, Filipina dating, Philippine women.” Search for “Filipina.” You’ll most likely notice that six out of 10 sites are NOT devoted to the advancement and accomplishments of the Filipina. This is exactly the main purpose why I chose Filipinas In Showbiz domain instead of just using the celebrity names. And today I’m proud to share that when you search “filipinas” on Google, Filipinas In Showbiz is top 3 in the automatic drop down search.
When men are seeking for Filipinas to marry by searching the internet, my hope is they will be directed to this showbiz blog about Filipina celebrities to see beautiful and sexy Pinays who are hardworking, decent, and strong women. They’re not in the mail-order bride business. Marian, KC, Claudine(albeit the bad news lately), and others will represent Filipina-isms with integrity and substance. The intrigues involving other Pinay celebs on some blog entries are part of the showbiz side of this blog. I try as much as I can to give that balance. This is a showbiz blog with an undisclosed(not anymore, hah) advocacy to uplift the terms filipinas, filipina, and pinay on various search engines.
I have been part of this campaign since my friends and I discussed this topic in the early 2000s. I’ve done and continues to do so in my personal blog. While I’m what you refer to as a “westernized” Pinoy, I’m a proud and strong ILocana Filipina. My efforts through this showbiz blog might be minuscule considering the scope of this problem but I would like to believe that I’ve contributed something however small that may be. Every little bit counts and it always starts somewhere.
Thank you for patronizing this blog and understanding exactly the purpose of the name Filipinas In Showbiz. Special thanks to a dear friend of mine, whom I met through blogging, for informing me of the Google search.
